Very good lens with one major dealbreaker
Reviewed in Germany on December 29, 2024 - Verified Purchase
Pros:
- the lens is sharp wide open on a 26mp sensor and generally clean optically
- it's almost free from LoCA, there's only a slight yellow outlining on very contrasting bokeh highlights, much better than most lenses around that price
- bokeh has a catseye shape that is symmetrical and pleasant rather than the unpleasant asymmetrical one
- the look of 75mm f1.2 on APSC translates to roughly 110mm f1.8 on FF which is stunning for the price and size, there is nothing else on the market, no matter the system, ideal for portraits
- the material of the lens feels premium except for the focus ring which is a bit too light and slippery
- comes with a pouch which is nice for the price, lens cap is good as well
Cons:
- some green flaring shooting into the sun is present
- with roughly 460g the lens will be front heavy on most APSC cameras, it definitely makes you slower and (in combination with the long focal length) more restricted in one hand usage
- !!! the one major flaw this lens has is backfocusing. I used this lens some weeks ago and had to return it for that reason, despite loving the look of the images when it actually hit focus. SIrui promised to work on a firmware update, so I cannot assess if the problem was resolved since then but when I used the lens, it did not hit focus reliably at all. Even with static images shot on a tripod, the lens would backfocus, almost as if the resolution of the focus motor is too low, resulting in an inability to accurately hit a focus plane that is between the two next best focus planes, if that makes sense. When trying to shoot a car far away, I could not get it into focus whatsoever. Only when I moved my feet considerably around (which often is not possible), I could get the focus to hit. I tested all my other lenses, both first-party Fujifilm premium lenses, and third-party lenses from Sigma as well as other budget Chinese manufacturers, none of them could reproduce the issue. All other lenses hit focus on static subjects reliably, you can point and shoot without any worry about focusing, it was NOT possible with the Sirui. The Sirui required you to always check after shooting if you hit focus, or to overshoot more than you need and pray that one of them is in focus.
If you work in a controlled environment, take 500 photos a session and can afford to have >50% of your shots missed, this lens might be great value. If you want a lens that you can point towards a subject, take a photo and not worry about your focus, this lens is not for you. It is especially frustrating because this lens directly competes with the much bigger and heavier Viltrox 75mm f1.2, so it would be a great walkaround alternative as per the lower weight. But given you cannot use it as a reliable point and shoot companion anyway because of the focus issues, the size and weight advantage is gone.
